50,000 years ago – a 300,00 ton meteorite travelling at 12 km/sec made impact in the AZ desert – resulting in a 1 km crater.

“Most of the meteorite was melted by the force of the impact, and spread across the landscape in a very fine, nearly atomized mist of molten metal. Millions of tons of limestone and sandstone were blasted out of the crater, covering the ground for a mile in every direction with a blanket of shattered, pulverized and partially melted rock mixed with fragments of meteoritic iron. ” – https://www.barringercrater.com/the-crater/

In 1928, astronomer F.R. Moulton showed that an 300,000 ton object couldn’t withstand an impact whole and would be destroyed and dispersed. Thousands of meteorite fragments have been recovered from the outer rim.
